Summary
Why cavity tones matter
During the landing approach of a commercial aircraft, airframe noise is as loud as engine noise, or louder. With air traffic growing and cities spreading around European airports, the annoyance near airports keeps increasing. The Advisory Council for Aeronautics Research in Europe (ACARE) set a target of 10 dB less noise per aircraft operation as a first 2020 goal.
Cavity noise is one of the most important airframe noise sources. When flow passes over an opening, vortex shedding at the upstream edge can generate intense tones through fluid-dynamic oscillation. At low flow speeds, depending on the cavity geometry, tones can also arise from fluid-resonant oscillation inside the cavity.
ACOCTIA targeted the source: the tones produced by landing-gear cavities through fluid-dynamic or fluid-resonant oscillation. The project consolidated the state of the art and combined passive and active control strategies to move towards the ACARE objectives.
The CORDIS project page holds the official record and the results summary “In-depth exploration of airframes to reduce noise pollution from planes”.
